Overview

When the CEO of one of our clients began experiencing intermittent system instability and boot failures, the issue quickly escalated into a potential business continuity incident. Initial diagnostics revealed that the laptop's NVMe SSD was experiencing hardware failure, placing years of critical business data at immediate risk.

Through a carefully planned recovery process involving sector-by-sector imaging and Linux-based recovery tools, our engineering team successfully recovered the drive, migrated all data to a new SSD, and restored the client's system with no user data loss.

The Challenge

The client's executive laptop contained business-critical information, including company documents, financial records, project files, and communications that were not fully replicated elsewhere.

Traditional cloning software proved unsuitable due to the deteriorating condition of the SSD. Every unnecessary read increased the risk of further degradation, making a conventional migration too risky.

The primary objectives were:

  • Preserve as much readable data as possible.
  • Minimize stress on the failing storage device.
  • Restore the executive's working environment quickly.
  • Prevent permanent data loss.

Our Approach

1. Hardware Assessment

After confirming symptoms consistent with NVMe SSD degradation, we determined that the priority was no longer repairing the operating system but preserving the remaining readable sectors of the drive.

Rather than attempting repeated repairs or file-level recovery, we shifted immediately to disk imaging.

2. Sector-by-Sector Recovery

Using a Linux recovery environment, we utilized GNU ddrescue, an industry-standard data recovery utility designed specifically for unstable storage devices.

Unlike conventional cloning tools, ddrescue intelligently:

  • Copies healthy sectors first.
  • Skips unreadable areas during the initial pass.
  • Maintains a recovery log for subsequent recovery attempts.
  • Minimizes unnecessary reads that could accelerate hardware failure.

This approach allowed us to recover the greatest amount of readable data possible while placing the least practical stress on the failing SSD.

Throughout the recovery process, all restoration work was performed from the recovered image wherever possible, minimizing further interaction with the failing SSD.

3. Drive Migration

Once a recoverable image of the original drive had been obtained, the recovered image was written to a brand-new SSD.

Following the migration, the restored drive underwent:

  • Filesystem integrity verification
  • Boot validation
  • Operating system health checks
  • Application functionality testing
  • User profile verification

Any filesystem inconsistencies resulting from unreadable sectors were identified and addressed during the restoration process.

The Result

The recovery was completed successfully, with the client's operating system, applications, and user data restored onto new hardware.

The CEO was able to resume work with minimal downtime and without the need to rebuild their working environment from scratch.

Outcome

  • Successful recovery of critical business data
  • Migration from failing NVMe storage to a healthy SSD
  • No user data loss
  • Minimal interruption to executive productivity
  • Reduced future storage risk through replacement of the failing SSD

Why the Right Recovery Method Matters

Failing SSDs present unique challenges compared to traditional hard drives. Continued use or repeated conventional cloning attempts can significantly reduce the likelihood of a successful recovery.

By using purpose-built recovery tools such as GNU ddrescue and following a preservation-first methodology, we were able to maximize recoverable data while avoiding unnecessary stress on the failing hardware.

Choosing the correct recovery strategy at the earliest stage was the key factor that enabled a successful outcome.

Conclusion

Data recovery is often a race against time. In this case, rapid diagnosis, the correct tooling, and a methodical recovery process prevented what could have become a significant business disruption.

Our team specializes in handling critical storage failures using industry-standard recovery techniques, allowing clients to return to business operations quickly while safeguarding their most valuable asset — their data.
